![]() Inflammation or infection of the duct can happen without a stone obstructing it, and that's called sialadenitis. ![]() You may also notice a bad taste in your mouth or notice pus draining from under your tongue. It'll be painful, particularly at mealtime when you're salivating, and it will be a little red and puffy. If a stone (just like a kidney stone, made up of some mineral salts) gets trapped in the duct, the duct will get inflamed. The duct opens to either side of the lingual frenum (the tongue tie skin thing) at little bumps you can see called caruncles. Basically an infection or stone in your submandibular duct that allows saliva to pass from your left submandibular gland to the floor of your mouth. ![]() I'm going to take a stab in the dark and say it's probably sialadenitis vs sialolithiasis.
